Since the 1990s, there has beenan increasing interest in knowledge management among policy-makers, practitioners and academics. In many parts of the world, business organizations have implemented different forms of knowledge management strategies. However, the underlying assumptions and the practical impact of such strategies remain as matters of debate. In this article, I present an overview of the different conceptualizations of the notion of knowledge management. The overview offered here derives from the recognition that any attempt to conceptualize knowledge management will require a reflection about the very nature of knowledge and management. Such reflection provides the opportunity to problematize some assumptions typically associated to the practice of knowledge management and the possibility to trace further directions in this field of study. In this respect, I offer a discussion about the challenges of complexity to knowledge management.
